In 2006, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation partnered with the Rockefeller Foundation to launch the Alliance for A Green Revolution in Africa. They ultimately dropped the ‘Green Revolution’ language, recognising that perhaps it wasn’t a great brand given the long term fallout of the Green Revolution in Asia. Nonetheless, the donors kept giving, and African governments kept matching.
Now, twenty years later, the data’s in,. AGRA promised to double yields and incomes for 30mn smallholder households while halving hunger by 2020. None of that happened. A new report from the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa fills in the details.
